These objects act as markers of a particular moment in time - signposts on the often disjointed journey from the world of art school back into real life.
Making within my means has become both a practical necessity and a conceptual framework. These ceramic pieces reflect a practice shaped by limited resources, constraints on time and energy, and the demands of emotional labour. They also speak to resilience, mindfulness, and the ongoing need to create playfully.
The work invites reflection on the value of artistic output - not only in terms of what is produced, but also in relation to the artists’ own personal growth and fulfilment. It asks how the act of making contributes to wellbeing, particularly when creativity must coexist with the pressures of everyday life.
Her work explores themes of survival, resistance, and the human capacity to heal, inviting viewers to reflect on their own inner fortitude. Through her art, Jillian not only weaves together threads but also the stories and emotions that bind us all.
Brooke Milliken (b.1996) is a multidisciplinary artist whose process-led practice spans text, installation, moving image and sculpture. Her work explores the complexities of identity and interrogates the in-between spaces where definitions blur and overlap. She uses language as both subject and medium to question structures of power, care and representation.
