Nought From Nought

Artist's Statement

Nought From Nought is a collection of new work, in keeping with my ongoing practice of figurative sculptures named 'The Formables', I use these figures to facilitate the exploration of concepts such as identity, community, empathy, experience and embodiment. My work is greatly influenced by the philosophical fields of existentialism and phenomenology, theology, and my own lived experience of chronic illness.

This exhibition takes the Formables back to their existential roots, exploring the perpetual forming of Self through our experiences, relationships with Others, our perceived purpose and grasped meaning throughout our lives; How this forming of our sense of individual personhood is influenced greatly by sensory physical interaction with matter and our interactions with Others, that continues to shape and mould us, both in isolation and as part of wider community.

These specific sculptures are made from organic matter - clay, sand and soil - all of which serve different purposes, and take varying forms with the addition of water, which often symbolises life; life that brings growth from soil, purpose to dust, meaningful order from chaos and Forms into Being.

Artist's Bio

Joy Jennings is a multimedia artist based in Dundee, she graduated from Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2025, with joint honours in Art and Philosophy. Joy’s work primarily explores Self, Other and Community, often engaging in collaborative and interactive workshops and installations, inviting audiences to engage both physically and reflectively and bring new meaning to her figurative works.
